Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. So basically there is a loss of touch with reality and the person develops an imaginary thinking that affects his perception of reality. Schizophrenia may present with hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behaviour that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling.
Symptoms of Schizophrenia
Delusions- are false beliefs that are not based in reality. example, “Someone is trying to kill me, harm me”
Hallucinations- Hearing voices no-one else can hear, Seeing things no-one else can see.
Disorganized speech and behaviour can make it difficult for a person with schizophrenia to communicate and interact with others.
Abnormal motor behaviour and violent or aggressive behaviour occasionally.
Negative symptoms include a lack of motivation, decreased emotional expression, social withdrawal, and poor self-care.
Cognitive symptoms can include difficulties with memory, attention, and decision-making, which can significantly impact a person’s ability to function in their daily life.
Treatment for Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment, even when symptoms have subsided. Treatment with medications and psychosocial therapy can help manage the condition. In some cases, hospitalization may be needed. Its not advisable to stop treatment without doctor’s advice.
A psychiatrist experienced in treating schizophrenia usually guides treatment. The treatment team also may include a psychologist, social worker, psychiatric nurse and possibly a case manager to coordinate care.
